Futons are a wonderful thing but choosing the wrong size for your needs can be an expensive mistake. There are upsides and downsides to both full futons and queen futons. This will give a brief out line of what you should consider when you ask that question "What size futon should I buy?"
What room is it going into?
Is it going in a guest room, office, den or family room? What room your new futon goes into usually determines how it will get used.
How will your new futon sofa sleeper be used?
If it's going in your family room or play room then it's likely that it's primary use will be as a sofa. Futons that end up in the home office or guest room tend to be used primarily as a bed.
How tall are most of your overnight guests?
Is every one that visits over 6 feet tall or under 6 feet tall? If you answered OVER then the queen gets the nod. Remember that a full size mattress is 6' 3" long and the average height of a person is something like 5' 7". A full is usually the best choice for most people.
Generally, how long do your guest stay?
Do you have friends and family that come to visit for several weeks or just a few nights? Most house guests stay for an average of 2 days and what we have found over the years is, if you don't tell them it's a full size bed... they will think it was a queen. And, over 50% of the people that currently own a futon think they have a queen but, when asked to measure, actually have a full.
When to buy a Full Size Futon:
1.) It's going in a room that will be used more than 3 times a week as a sofa.
2.) It's primary purpose/use will be a couch.
3.) Guests only stay for a few days at a time.
4.) Most guests are under 6' tall.
5.) You are less than 6' tall.
When to buy a Queen Size Futon:
1.) Your family and friends are 6' or taller.
2.) It will be used as bed every night.
3.) Your guests generally stay for more than one week at a time.
If it's primary use is a sofa most people will find the full size more comfortable to sit on. How is that? A queen is longer and wider than a full. When in the sofa position the queen will be a little longer, the back will be a higher, and the seat will be deeper. It's the depth of the seat that gets you. For example, I'm 5' 10" tall and my feet don't touch the floor when sitting on most queen futons. In addition, the queens "look" big. Full size futons are better proportioned, appearance wise.
